This year Un-Convention invented the YouCube; a cube where new and upcoming bands are
presented by an ‘offline profile’. On each side of the cube one band will show their biography,
press photo and two or three songs which you can listen to on the attached MP3-player.
Two sides of the cube will represent the new scouted talents by Freesonica. You can listen to two of their fresh-recorded songs and check the bands live at the Eurosonic Showcase on Friday 14th. (@ Images )
Freesonica (collaborating with PopFabryk Friesland) is a band coaching project that scouts two or three bands a year to support them with management trainings, booking shows and presenting themselves to the music-industry.
If you want to be one of the first to experience the future of music, feel free to put on some
headphones at the YouCube!

Sadly Wouter Stoter and Victor Ponten had to cancel for our Video Killed The Radio Star panel.
We found great replacement though: Job de Wit and Andre Maat.

Fiona Daniel and Peter Parker will be in the panel ‘Sounds Like Manchester’ Thursday January 13th. Biogs:
After coming third in the 1997 UK DMC DJ championships Dan Baxter aka Peter Parker was drafted to play in the Rae & Christian live band by Mark Rae where he met Sneaky, a double bass player, and the pair formed a special bond whilst touring the world with the Grand Central label owners. Only to become Fingathing, a live turntable and bass outfit that, along with Chris Drury (Graphic Designer and silent third member) rose to notoriety on the underground music scene. “The Main Event” was released in 2000 to high critical acclaim, and then in 2002 “Superhero Music” saw them reach new heights as DJ Shadow himself asked them to support him on his second LP UK tour. After consistent worldwide live shows 2004 saw the release of “Fingathing and the Big Red Nebula Band”, an electro-clash breakthrough LP produced with James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco) which again broke more barriers for the group. Now with Sneaky living in Berlin, the pair have just completed their fouth LP. Set for release in 2011 and currently titled “Undead”, the duo will be back to raise audio/visual hell once again.
I am an experienced contemporary drummer and DJ who has played with
many signed acts, toured the world, recorded on several albums and played
live sessions at legendary studios like Maida Vale. I have played with UK
acts, The Whip, Filthy Dukes, Performance, Dead Disco (now known as Little
Boots) and The Noisettes along with number one selling international act
Robyn. I DJ independently and with the band and have played DJ sets in UK,
Germany, Spain, Austria, Japan and USA.
The 2009 and 2010 gig highlights – Glastonbury festival (the other stage),
opening of FAC51 in Manchester , Dubai Sound City, Snowbombing,
Beatherder festival, Poland Free Form Festival plus many other festivals and
The Warehouse Project in Manchester, NYE at Matter to name but a few
shows. We also supported The Courteeners on their sell out tour of the UK.
The Whip have also toured America, Japan and Europe. Another highlight of
2009 was appearing as guest drummer alongside Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura)
and Steve Slingeneyer (Soulwax) as part of the finale for Soulwaxmas, which
also featured the other members of Soulwax and Mixhell.
I have also played TV gigs, such as GMTV (ITV) and Sound (BBC 2) with
Robyn and The Whip. I also appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel show (USA)
performing with The Whip as part of our USA tour.
Currently signed with The Whip (with worldwide record deals), 2011 will see
the release of The Whips second album and more touring all over the world.
I have been featured with the band in various numerous newspapers,
magazines and online internationally. I have also been featured in the Bizarre
section of The Sun, Heat Magazine, front cover of Sandman Magazine and
completed the 60 second interview in the London Lite.
I have also sat on music industry panels for the BBC, Unconvention and
Women in Music.
By Martin Atkins
Friday January 14th 11:30 – 12:30
“You should fail because your band is shit or because you don’t have the balls. You shouldn’t fail because of a lack of some basic advice and a bit of planning.” Martin Atkins comes to the rescue and is here to rock your boat.
What’s Your Story
By Saskia Troccoli & Rutger Middendorp
Friday January 14th 11:30 – 12:30
Every artist has a story that makes him/her interesting and unique. But not many use this story consciously for their branding, interviews, songs, concepting etc. Through different examples Rutger Middendorp and Saskia Troccoli will show how you can use a story and which benefits you can achieve from this.
Send and e-mail to info[@]unconventiongroningen.com if you want to participate.
