What is Un-Convention

Un-Convention is a global grassroots music and creative community – that meets physically and virtually to share ideas; discuss and debate cutting edge issues around music, technology and creativity; and facilitates members engagement with their peers. Un-Convention is not about the business of music. The community is driven by a not for profit initiative that sees opportunity for the grassroots in the changes to the way music is being produced, consumed and sustained. Un-Convention understands that the most interesting stuff happens on the margins. We don’t mind the mainstream. We just don’t find it relevant. Un-convention doesn’t believe in ‘do it yourself’. We believe in ‘do it together’.

Un-Convention events are run un-conventionally, they happen in un-conventional spaces (boats, barges, churches and working men’s clubs) and they involve some of the most inspiring, thought leaders in the world. Think TEDtalks for the music community.

Un-Convention is introducing initiatives like the Un-Convention Fellowship to allow musicians the ability to access events, regardless of income. In India, 100 Un-Convention Fellowships were awarded. Un-Convention events are always affordable to all. Un-Convention has a strong music as a tool for social change strand through the events and projects. This takes the form of hip hop projects in the barrios of Colombia to innovative music projects in the slums of India.

Starting as an alternative to mainstream music events around the world – Un-Convention was first held in Salford in October 2008. Two years on, 15 events later, Un-Convention has grabbed the attention of the global grassroots music community and now has events taking place in India, Colombia, Brazil, Australia, Spain, Germany, USA, Iceland – each event carrying the overall Un-Convention ethos, but each driven by it’s local grassroots music scene and infrastructure. All being coordinated from Salford with instigators around the globe.
